Development Blog 17 - Relaunched Patreon

Just a quick update, had fun making a slime girl.


I've relaunched the Patreon Page, you can check it here. I figured I'd give it another shot, at least for a while unless it picks up momentum. Otherwise for me its not worth the extra effort.

So quick progress update, I'm getting close now to a 0.3.0 release, I just want to get several things down pat before I do as I won't get a chance to in the future (Like cleaning junk folders). I plan this version to be the first "continuing" version, meaning save files will be portable to future versions... I hope. The amount of changes from 0.2.0 to 0.3.0 is quick huge, so many fixes, improvements and new features. I am going to cut a few features from 0.3.0 so I can get it out sooner, some features may be lacking but new version sooner than later.

Development Blog 16 - New layers and Browser!

Mixing and matching accessories, newly added Layers to clothes.

New Accessories, I've created a few new accessories for the next update; Shirt collar as seen above as well as shoes! I plan on doing much more as the coding side calms down. Accessories is the most powerful customisation system in the character creator. Read more here. Its really exciting every time I add a new object to it and then having a flood of ideas how to use it to create even more outfits.

Clothing Layers! The creator now has + and - symbols on clothes tabs, these will make clothes appear on top of others (As shown above with the shirt over the skirt). Which again allows for some really fun mixing and matching of clothes and textures. You can have things like full body fish nets under (Or over) a outfit or wear underwear on your outside clothing... I mean if you want to but its possible now!

In-Game Browser, one thing I never noticed until after I had released 0.2.0 was the browser for choosing files outside of the game wouldn't work so well in fullscreen mode and would tab you out of the game. For the most part I work in windowed mode so I didn't realise this, however now I've developed an in game version that won't tab you out. It includes a thumbnail preview of the selected item so you can see which texture you're choosing before loading it.

I feel that the next version of After Hours Island will be soon at this rate.

Now I want to get into something a bit more developer related but some might find interesting...
I plan on migrating all save files into a readable format, so if you open a .outfit file in a text editor like Notepad, you'll be able to read the contents of the file. This will be useful for those who wish to tweak their game more. This will also include character files so if people truly desire to, they can increase body parts great than what the character creator supports.

Development Blog 15 - Normal Maps, Hair and Improved code

If you don't know what a Normal map is, its a bump texture map that makes detail pop, in the screenshot above (You'll have to enlarge it to see it) you can see the skin pore bumpiness.

Its really simple to use, you have your diffuse texture for example Body_Nice.png, to add a bump map to be loaded with it we also have a normal map texture called Body_Nice_n.png and it'll automatically load with it. While I don't have the best examples for it now you can get some really nice visuals with it.

Since I haven't worked on my code in a while I've been going over it and fixing several bits and bobs, mostly just making everything run smoother. I'm getting close to finishing the basic character loading into the world functionality.

Last but not least, MORE HAIR CHOICES. It's been bugging me that there was only 1 hair piece, so I've done some work with other programs and now started to get more hair into the game.

Blog 14 - Back in Action

Back again!

So I recently got diagnosed with a chronic illness, turns out I was very sick after all. I'm on the end of it greatly effecting me so I'm more or less back. I've had some recent developments as well which will mean I work less on this game compared to what I was doing before.

I haven't got a release schedule or even know when I'll be able to show more off but know that its still happening, just slowly.

Blog 13 - Not so great

Hey guys, just a small update!

I've made some cool progress lately, started to make a world to walk around and interact with, not going too over board with it yet, I still want to get those H scenes priority as well as AI development.

Personal: Recently I've gotten very sick, I haven't been able to work at all on this since I did get sick and I've barely been able to work on my other projects too. I'm hoping I can get it sorted soon but it may be a while before I post another update...

Development Blog 12 - New Menus and Saving!

New Menus, new options and saving!
Back again with another update, some serious work has been put into this one. Lets start off with the Menu's, there is now Options for adjusting the visual quality of the game in-game, you can also switch the languages in there too (Although only English is properly supported at the moment). Most importantly you can now create save games and load them! What does this mean exactly?

Now you can create a "world" which for now you can name and choose your character, you also have the option to add characters to your world and choose their appearance files too. At the present time there isn't any hard cap on the amount of characters you can have in your world (This may change in the future). Once in game you can then open the new escape menu and save the world and the status of the characters in it. Pretty cool and solid start to more gameplay! There is still a fair amount that needs coding in before we can save them yet but the basics are there.

Now I can add in the fetish stat system I've mentioned before, I will also be implementing a basic family system where by sharing entered Last names counts as being related. I want to do a proper family tree system allowing to set parents/children etc but will hold off until more fun stuff is added. I will be looking into replacing the "browse" button window pop up soon as well, its rather annoying if you're playing in full screen as it minimises the game.

Game now has load screens; now that some things can take several seconds or longer to load depending on your computer the load screens will let you know that the game hasn't crashed or froze.

Additional:
I've rearranged the My Documents After Hours Island folder structure, added several folders and moved others into better locations. Mostly for future proofing purposes and a more logical layout. Lots of characters in one area can slow the game down at the moment, I don't expect too many in one area at a time however but I do want to try to improve it and I hope world layout will help fix it.

I've put a lot of effort into making this as custom as reasonably possible, so much so that in theory you will be able to share your created characters and worlds with relative ease. You can even edit character profile settings and world settings files in a easy to use format.

Development Blog 11 - Get naked

Whats an adult game if you can't get undressed. Time for another massive blog.

I've begun work on the sex scene stuff as previously mentioned, now you can get undressed! You can do this at any time (For now, might make it sex scenes specific). Depending on how many pieces of clothes the buttons on the top left will increase allowing you to take off any piece of choice. Accessories will be at a later date as they're more complicated and I might just separate them into their own menu drop down. Leave button bottom right will stop the scene rather than pressing escape. Bottom left is the speed slider. Menu stuff is work in progress and for now is just functionality than looks, I'll polish it up at a later date.

I'm totally not putting off doing more sex animations... okay I am but for several reasons. I want to get a grasp on how the scenes will work in the first place, doing animations is good but I may need to tweak a few things here and there and likely would have to adjust the animation which is time consuming. I still need to setup multiple characters in one scene and I don't know how that'll be achieved in gameplay. I also don't know how in depth I want to go... I've been checking out what other games do. Some notable ones have complex animated systems where you can make the animations yourself, while that sounds cool its super complex and time consuming... not to mention limiting in some respects. I'm a team of one and I have to work to my strengths so that's not really going to be possible outside of people learning a 3D animation program.

I'm looking to bring something to the table in terms of gameplay, nothing wild and ground breaking but more fun interaction in a sex scene or activity. The joy of video games is being able to do things you can't in real life so I want to explore that aspect more. I'm gonna get real weird with it. I'd elaborate more on what I have in mind but I don't want to let people down if I don't do it.

New Donations

I've decided to change how I do donations, you can now donate $2 and be added to a mailing list which will send out with the latest version of After Hours Island development build before the public gets it. Think of the cost as buying an App for your mobile phone.

Question: Why $2 and not $1?
Answer: Fees. After conversion rates and PayPal's cut, $1 ends up more like $0.25 cents or less on my end.

Question: Do I have to keep donating every month to keep receiving development versions?
Answer: Initially, no. You'll be notified when $2 a month rolls out.

Question: Why not Patreon?
Answer: I did have a Patreon for several months but it didn't pick up any momentum (Understandably), for non-US residents you have to go through US Tax and a whole bunch of hoops to receive the money you earn. For the amount potentially received it wasn't worth the effort and I didn't want the money to be chewed up by unnecessary fees and cuts.

Question: Is the game still free?
Answer: Always, by donating you gain access to the earlier development versions (Donation Only) and stable releases a week before they go public.

Question: Why should I donate if its free?
Answer: To keep the game alive! Donations can go a long way to help me out personally to give me more time to work on this and continue to do future updates.


I'll be adding additional donation options soon, keep an eye on the Donations page. I'm looking at doing content request donations, for example for $10 you can get a custom texture for a piece of clothing such as a dress. (Actual prices are yet to be listed) Then it'll be sent to you and added into the games next release.

I feel that this system will let you directly gain the features and content you want and help the development at the same time. I will also include options for private content as well.

Development Blog 09 - Lost in Translation

Translation support is now added!

After checking out where people have been viewing the game from, I've noticed there are quite a few non-English speaking countries so I've spent the night adding in the ability for people to translate the game. While I'm only English speaking myself the hope that people will utilise this functionality and share their translations around.

Its a really simple system, make a copy of a Language xml file, open it with a text editor and any sentences (In theory) you see in the game you define then write a translation for it. The language then appears in a list on the main menu and you can select it. Anything not translated uses the default English in its place.

Not exactly gameplay but I wanted something different to work on and I hope non-English speakers appreciate it. Soon I'll work on something more interesting.

Development Blog 08 - You can (Not) redo it again

Back again, development has slowed right down, funds aren't there to keep the pace.

I've almost finished with rigging and the sorts I've talked about in previous updates, this time I've added several new clothing pieces and improved upon the old ones. Which means I've committed to the current female model and rig which is a big deal, can't change much without breaking it and clothes and accessories specifically made for the female would all have to be redone if I redo the rig or model.

New Clothing includes (So far):
Gloves - as shown on the image above in purple they go up most of the arm.
Long Skirt - Its long and body tight, still needs a bit of work I'm sure.
Remade:
Bras - now are slightly larger and go over the shoulders and up the neck for more detail
Rest - Just overall better, improved and smoothed out janky areas

Any clothes that forms around the body now uses the body texture map where possible, this is so if you say have a fish net texture for the body but only want it on the gloves the texture will be compatible with the gloves.

Add high heel feet, little check box in the Outfit tab, neat. While there aren't shoes to put on the feet (yet), this is just another future proofing step than trying to add and fix it later.


Future Updates
My next release will definitely have more gameplay features, I hope to get it done sooner than later. I will also be doing a big update on Patreon and spreading the word in hopes of getting patrons. This project is very quickly becoming a very low priority for me because of my financial position; thus giving me a lot less time to be able to work on it. I hope people will see the full potential next release and will help me out and make this game a reality.

Development Blog 07 - Bra Support

Some additional Outfit settings for gameplay, in-depth explanations this time!


So I've done a bit of a visual update on the Character Creator menus just colour coding the Character stuff from the Outfit stuff. Did a bunch of bug fixes and ironed out some glitches. I plan on doing some "?" (help) buttons in each Character Creator Tab to help explain what exactly things do, I've started to notice the complexity of the Creator myself.

I've added in several tick boxes into the Outfit tab that now properly function, Bra support being the most visual, your outfits can have bra support which makes the breasts less bouncy and jiggly through the use of the slider to the degree of anti jiggle you want. This allows your characters to have some sagging and/or very bouncy breasts be contained like real bra's would do. I made the decision for it to be a tick box than clothing piece specific to allow people to decide what outfits has the bra effect.

The Exposed Chest and Crotch define whether those areas are publicly visible, while your character might be completely clothed they may have nipple holes cutout and we want the game to know that's the case, this will play into how other characters will view your character (Fetish effect as well). Face Mask works similarly where if its ticked the characters face is assumed covered (In a mask, get it) and other characters will not know who they are. Which ties into fetishes as well as how characters perceive the characters, not knowing who they are and their friendship/relationship with the masked character won't be effected ( At least that's the plan ).

Exposure is a kind of 0 to 10 multiplier of lewdness in an outfit. 0 means they're completely covered up, no skin showing (Turtle necks!?). 10 is completely naked, with the exception of something like gloves. The idea being that characters in short shorts with an under boob shirt will be recognised for it with a higher exposure rating, which I think is fun dynamic and not many adult games have that diversity and mostly just clothed and unclothed.

Outfit type is mostly for the AI (None player characters), how characters perceive your character and future proofing. One of the ideas I have is to have money in the game, which can be used to purchase clothing. The AI would purchase an outfit and the "Clothing Type" helps it know what the outfit is, this is so if you make dozen of outfits for characters to use they can randomly pick out ones for suitable use, instead of the BDSM outfit for going out for ice cream.

And the outfit name speaks for itself, likely show up when you "purchase" an outfit in game or viewing it.

One thing I almost forgot to add and will be doing soon is a high heel feet option, I was considering making a shoes tab dedicated to shoes on the feet but I feel like Accessories covers that nicely (less work too). All the tick box will do is put the feet into a pose that would fit a high heel, seems simple enough but animations would break if I just pose them so I'm using foot swapping technology or something along those lines.

Development 06 - Accessories Improved!

Back again with more Accessories news!


I've added controls to it now, you can re-position, rotate and scale accessories. This basic ring shape shows off how you can easily position and reuse simple shapes for various results. Which I think is pretty cool and powerful. I've also done several bug fixes around the Character Creator (CC) and menus will now more properly update when loading characters and outfits (Totally didn't forget to do that in 0.2.0).

With the exception of a few small additions to the CC, the main focus will soon be on finalising the character rig and then moving onto gameplay and the world. I'm increasing the priority on gameplay so there will be more to do sooner than later.

Development 05 - Accessories!

More... MORE CHARACTER CREATOR FEATURES!

I feel like I'm insane for putting so much attention into the Character Creator but its all for a good cause!

I've begun work on Accessories tab that allows you to have up to 32 (May differ on release) accessory pieces. What exactly are accessories? They can be anything from a hat, bracelet, neck-lace, pop collar, tie and the list goes on. The idea is to allow for some diverse clothing options and mixing and matching different pieces.

The way this currently works is you'll select an accessory from list (In this case the ring) then you choose a body part which it'll connect to (As shown on the top left "Right Nipple") by pressing the + and - symbols to shuffle through all the body parts until you get the position you want then you apply it. It'll likely have a ghosting feature where you can see a preview of the position. While this seems a little inefficient its purpose is to be robust and work long into the future.

What I've left to do on this is add in position sliders and scale sliders which will let you define where you want these clothing pieces to go exactly, this feature ties in with modding once again in case people want to create some piece of clothing accessory that doesn't exist or want to add furry ears etc.

Accessories will be tied to Outfits and will save along with clothing choices.

*Developer Notes
The female revamped messed up the majority of clothing, they'll have to be redone once the female model is complete. I did however leave them in for the sake of testing so they'll look weird. Fair amount of bugs around still but getting better with every release.

Development 04 - Next Release Soon...

Been a week and a bit since my last update, things have been slowly progressing well and almost ready for a release, just need to fix a few things first! So here's a screenshot!


So what to expect in this next version, well the Character Creator has been revamped with a few new features and reworked infrastructure behind the scenes. Boobs now have physics! "How good are they", they are as 'good' as you want them to be, there are 4 dedicated sliders to the boob physics, so you can customise all your boob needs to what you want. Slider effects the gravity, weight, stiffness and sway... relatively. Different slider combinations have different effects so you'll be messing with them for a while! Basically you can have saggy boobs or firm well lifted boobs.

Sandbox/Test play area is in... although lacking. For now you can play as a character you've created and have a bot control a 2nd character. Play in either first person or third. Really just something extra to show off where the game is going in terms of gameplay.

Development Blog 03 - Reworking the Character Creator

Hey guys back with another progress update!
Character Creator progress has been great, I've made the system more dynamic as to make adding new gender models in much easier when I do get around to doing them! I've also included shiny sliders to body parts so now you can fine tune your character even more! There also will be a few new additions to the character customisation such as new body sliders to more variation on the face!

Extra development notes:
I've been reworking the female body a little bit, lips are a bit thicker, some of the rigging on the body is slightly improved in areas. One of the biggest changes I've done is prepared the feet for high heels, when done heels should be very easy to implement. I'm doing a lot of future proofing on everything I make which is slowing visible development but means more functionality later on.

Most recent thing I've done is been laying out Relationships with other characters, whether they are blood rated, are they their boss or subordinate or what kind of relationship they have between each other such as being lovers or friends. Originally I was going for some basic straight forward system where you could only have one but I found by spending some time I discovered a 3 system which I explain below.

Blood Relation: 
Are they related to a character or not, if they are what kind of relationship do they have (Parent, child, sibling etc)
Relationship:
A simple system that determines a characters current status with another character - Stranger, Friend, Lover, Spouse (This can effect fetishes and vice versa)
Occupation Relation: 
Who does the character work for or who works for this character, while not exactly used yet it'll effect the experiences characters will have on each other like a boss telling its employee to do work or an action. This also includes relations such as a Teacher-Student relationship.

This trio system allows for connection with several areas such as family, work and relations with other characters and have them all work together without having to sacrifice (for example) a friendship with another character because they're in the same job place. I've probably said this a million times now but I am hoping to get this game to a point where it can be universally played by a large variety of people and have that last a long time to come.

Development Blog 02 - Sexual Acts Implementation

Progress!
Been making really good progress, more than I thought I would in such as short time.

Gameplay - You can now switch between first and third person view, there's an interaction system in now! At the moment you can walk up to a few locations and commence a sex scene, for now all sexual acts are listed but I will be soon implement only listing relevant scenes, for example a chair will have only sitting involved scenes. The fetish stats will also come into play but for now functionality first.

AI is getting better, the characters when their needs are low will seek out a location to replenish their needs, at the moment when their hygiene is low they'll shower. They also seek out a 'private' location when they're horny enough, if they can't find a place that's not in use or private location they'll move onto riskier public areas.

Modding - To my own surprise I've created a working system that allows for Custom Fetishes & Custom Sex Scenes (Make your own Animations*). Completely working, I didn't expect to have it done so fast... sure there's plenty of unknown bugs but that's pretty sweet none the less!

Short explanation of how this works, a creator would have to have Unity downloaded, a 3d editing software such as Maya, 3ds Max or Blender etc. They would export an animation out of the scene, set it up in Unity then package it up to a folder. From there you can define in an XML file the name of the scene, description, a thumbnail screenshot and the fetishes it uses and bonuses it gives, then just simply put it into the games Addons Folder. This will be explained properly when its properly ready.

I'll get some screenshots soon I promise! I'll do a dedicated update to it if I don't in the next dev blog.

I'm going to look into alternative donation options, my funds are getting quite low and Patreon while a nice system, doesn't do so well for international Creators.

Development Blog 01 - Getting the Basics done

First Development Blog!
I've been hard at work trying to build up a core for the game, I'm trying to get all the fundamentals of the longevity mechanics in place early on. This includes things like being able to load in custom textures (As seen in the Character Creator).

What I've been working on - AI (Artificial Intelligence) - So far when a character gets "horny" they'll find a private location and masturbate. Doesn't sound super exciting but they can navigate the world I've built so far which is a great step forward. This also relates and connects with the behaviour system I'm developing.

Gameplay - Basic thus far however intentionally so, I need to get so much done before I can safely work on something and not have to scrape all that work later. You can move around in Third person and zoom in and out to first person. Not a whole lot of interaction and control yet.

Fetish Stats - One of the core mechanics however is currently underway, the Fetish stat system. This system is a type of progression in the game, the fetish stat system determines what your character and other characters can do, for example if your oral stat is at 10% you can only do certain oral sexual acts, after doing several sex acts the stat increases opening more sexual options up in that fetish. Fetishes will also cross play with other ones, for example if your character performed oral sex in a 'public' place their 'Oral' stat would go up as well as a 'Exposure' stat. With time you may be able to perform oral sex on strangers in public if your stats are high enough. I feel like this could be a really fun system and gives an experience that you slowly build upon giving characters more depth and even developing sexual preferences as you go. Who knows you may even level up some fetishes you've never tried before ;)

Modding - This is the biggest thing I want to talk about! My plan is to add in as much customisation and mod support as feasibly possible. The idea being that a community can contribute content to each other giving the game greater depth while I develop more features in the mean time. It also gives the game longevity if I ever have to stop work on it.

What kind of custom content will people be able to create, foremost custom textures for the characters as seen in the Character Creator. Right now I'm developing the 'Fetish' and 'Sex Act' system, with the right tools and skill set you'll be able to create your own. You can create an XML with the name of your fetish and a description of it, then later content such as animations can be created for that fetish. For example I create the Oral 'Fetish', this stat now appear in the game, I then create a set of 'sex act' animations for this 'Fetish' which then can have fetish requirements to be met. While this is just a brief overview explanation I'll create a Modding Guide page in the future to help explain more.

Future Road Map (Next Version+) - The plan right now is to make a basic open world, I want to have several character slots that you can create and load into your world that interact with each other and have several sex acts in. The world will have several small locations to begin with such as a basic apartment, outside the apartment and maybe a bar across the street. I do have plans to go beyond just a socialising game and maybe even branch into a Job and Business manager. While I've love to go into detail about them I can't promise anything yet.
